What to Watch: Weekend Baseball

It’s July 4th weekend, which means you should plan on getting a heavy dose of baseball, hot dogs, and fireworks. All three can be accomplished at a ballpark, so I advise making your way to the closest one and setting up camp.

If you can’t go to a game, then buy a few Nathan’s or Hebrew National’s at the store and try and catch these must-see match-ups from the comfort of your couch…

Friday: Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox
It’s baseball’s version of “The Tortoise and the Hare” when Tim Wakefield (10-3) and Felix Hernandez (8-3) square off. Wakefield – whose fastball tops out at 80 mph – is having a stellar season at the age of 42. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old King Felix, has been nearly unhittable this season thanks to his electric fastball.

Saturday: Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees (1:05 p.m.)
If fireworks weren’t enough, Yankee Stadium will feature baseball’s best starting pitcher Saturday when Toronto’s Roy Halladay comes to town. Unfortunately for pinstripe fans, he’ll be going against Chien-Ming Wang (1-6 10.06 ERA), which I’m pretty sure is Mandarin for “tee ball pitcher.”

Sunday: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets (1:35 p.m.)
Finally, finish up your holiday weekend with an NL showdown between two teams fighting for first in the NL East. Johan Santana, who is 2-0 against the Phillies this season, takes the mound for the Mets, who are 4-6 over their last 10 games.
